I was in the yard last year and got bitten by a tiny little ant on my left hand. I didn't think anything of it but it started to swell almost immediately. Being a man, I did my best to ignored it :-)My wife came home a few hours later and saw my hand swollen quite considerably, and was concerned that I was not directly dealing with the problem. She strongly suggested that I go to the hospital, a recommendation that I immediately dismissed. I went to bed instead. The next day the swelling was worse. My hand was the size of a small melon. It didn't really hurt, but it was obvious that I was having some viscous allergic reaction and it looked gross. That didn't bother me, but then I couldn't type, so I had to take action. That morning, I was showing it to some of my colleagues at the office and one of my buddies (with no medical experience) said, "you should be ok as long as the bite doesn't become hard with a little red dot in the middle". Within the NEXT HOUR the bite became hard with a little red dot in the middle! I then called my wife in a panic. She said, "Go to the doctor. He will probably give you a tetanus shot and antibiotics (which will do nothing) but at least you will feel better. I went to the my traditional MD, who was fascinated with my hand the size of a melon. I have to admit it looked pretty weird. He showed it to all the fellow physicians in the office. They thought it was fascinating but were at a loss for the cause other than bug bit :-) I turned to the doctor and said said "Admit it, you don't know what this is" He said "You're right, but the swelling is pretty unusual. Let me give you a tetanus shot and some antibiotics. " I took the shot and called my wife, taking careful pains to compliment her on her forecasting skills. She then took the initiative and contacted her Chinese Medicine doctor in Phoenix. He prescribed Five Flavor Pills. 5 pills every three hours for 3-5 days. I took the pills and the swelling reduced by the end of the day. By the next day, the swelling was completely eliminated. I stopped taking the pills after the second day, because I was "cured". My wife was a tad perturbed that I didn't finish the prescription but that is the way I roll. I am an advocate for Chinese medicine when it comes to bug bites.
